Why Small Groups are Vital
At New Mercy, we absolutely believe the best way to get plugged in and to become a part of the community is through family groups (New Mercy’s version of small groups). In fact, small groups are so fundamental to New Mercy’s vision, that we hesitate to call it a ministry. Rather, we like to think of ourselves as a church of small groups.
Fundamental to Christian life are intimate relationships. Jesus and the bible teach emphatically that life can only be truly experienced in deep, meaningful relationships with God and with people. Large groups alone, including Sunday Services, will never provide for this profound relational need effectively. Authentic Christian community occurs only when people meet regularly, pray together and for each other, provide deep accountability, support each other in struggles and crises, study the Word together, share, experience life and joy together, laugh with one another, and are vulnerable with each other. In turn, these relational elements help us to experience ourselves as individuals in a more healthy, integrated, and normalized way. All of this is best realized in the small-group context. Unfortunately, most Christians do not have this type of community even with their closest friends. In the bible, the church is called to provide for this necessity of the Christian life.
Pastor John Huh, who is receiving his Ph.D. in pastoral counseling, leads NMCC’s small group ministry. By using the skills he has gained as a pastoral counselor in conjunction with the biblical imperatives and exhortations that teach us how to love and to relate with one another, Pastor John is developing small groups that are intimate, safe, and gospel-centered.
Oh, and let’s not forget, they’re a lot of fun, too! Many of our congregants have testified that going to family group is usually the highlight to their week. They are not only enjoy it profoundly, but they help members stay afloat as they live life together.
If you’re looking for this type of support and encouragement in your life, please fill out the interest form below. A person will contact you with more information and specific details. Also, please feel free to try out more than one group. Family Group descriptions follow the form.

Some of the common topics we explore are joys and concerns of college life, family, friends, vocation, health, prayer, and service. Once in a while, we also take our small group outside of the dorm rooms and hang out by going bowling or eating out together. And in the winter, we have our annual college group retreat where we get to know God and each other even more. So if you are a college student and you are looking for a cozy small group to join, please check us out!

Mad Food
- Group Leader: Pastor Kee Won Huh
- When: Tuesdays at 8pm
- Where: Fort Lee, NJ (Near Linwood Plaza/H-Mart)
- Email: keewon.huh@newmercy.cc
- We like to eat. (We eat every week.) The name is no exaggeration. We eat so much every week that people always have something to take home! On top of this, we have great coffee and tea. We also like to have fun. (We have fun every week.) But what we like most is probing the deep questions of faith. Some people in our group are skeptical, some have had deep encounters with God, others have traversed difficult paths to come to faith and others have solid reasons for their living faith. Yet despite the varied spectrum of faith, we all feel comfortable sharing our thoughts, sharpening each other and encouraging each other toward a deeper life with God. Besides not judging each other, we pray for one another and support each other. In a very real way, we are learning what it means to be family in God.

- TWHS = “That’s What He Said” We are a group of people in our mid to late 20′s, consisting of couples who are in different stages of relationships. We are serious about accountability within our relationships and believe this can be achieved with an environment of vulnerability, honesty, and a realization that we’re in this together. Whether going out into the city, watching the game, or having bible study, we love to be in each others company while growing together in Christ.
-
Married with Children
- Group Leader: Charles Choy
- When: Approximately two Fridays per month at 7:30pm
- Where: Wyckoff, NJ
- Email: mondogchoy@gmail.com
- Controlled or partially controlled chaos environment where our children enjoy each other’s company. While the kids are distracted the parents share about their lives and struggles with raising children, keeping connected to God and living the Christian life. We’re a pretty close knit group right now but hoping to expand our family group as more and more families are becoming members of New Mercy. We’re pretty laid back as a group and we mix up the structure of our meetings regularly. Every once in a while we split the group to women and men and take turns watching the kids while the other group has fellowship at a local restaurant. All in all, we really like growing together as an extended family.

The Breakfast Club
- Group Leader: Annie & Joseph June
- When: Saurdays at 11am
- Where: Glen Rock, NJ
- Email: annie.june@gmail.com
- While the name of our group may date the leaders a bit, we take our name from the 80′s “timeless classic” about 5 high school students who seemingly have nothing in common, but are brought together for 8 hrs of detention where they bear their souls and realize they have more in common than they originally thought. Without meaning to suck the life out of the metaphor completely, our hope is that The Breakfast Club at NMCC is a place where individuals and families can gather – in our various stages of life, with our different passions and histories, seemingly more different than similar – to experience and struggle through life together, discover new friendships and witness the unique unity we have through Christ. While there is a 2-yr old daughter and 7-yr old cat in our home, anyone is welcome: you do not need a child, marriage license or pet to enter. Oh, and of course the June twist is that great coffee and breakfast will be served. Sincerely yours, The Breakfast Club.
